Job Title:Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) (Mid, Senior, and Staff Levels)

Location:Remote

Role Overview

We are partnering with a well-established, global services company operating in a regulated industry and handling sensitive health data. The company is modernizing how it builds technology, with new customer-facing web and mobile experiences, a unified design system, and AI-powered capabilities across its products. Engineering, Product, and Design work together end to end to raise the bar for how software is designed, built, and operated.

AI is not a productivity add-on here. It is how the team builds. The engineering organization uses agentic development as standard equipment, moving from problem to production-ready code faster than traditional development allows, while keeping the work reviewable and maintainable. We are looking for SDETs who already work this way.

Quality is an engineering discipline, not a phase, and there is no manual QA layer beneath the SDETs. You own the strategy, automation, and signal quality for your team, with exploratory testing as deliberate work alongside maintainable automation. Agents help turn requirements into scenarios, generate automation, and diagnose failures; you own the judgment on whether the evidence is trustworthy. Because of the sensitive nature of the data, PHI never enters non-production environments. A Platform team owns environments and pipelines, and you own what runs on them: test configuration, data, and signal quality.

We are hiring multiple SDETs and are flexible on level (Mid, Senior, or Staff). The focus differs by level:

Staff SDET: Raise the bar for testing automation across the organization, build a framework that helps other SDETs and software engineers automate testing more effectively, and help the team test AI products.

Senior SDET: Own quality strategy, automation, and signal quality for a team, with heavy emphasis on AI-first practice and automation.

SDET (Mid-Level): A more traditional SDET role, also heavy on AI and automation, focused on product testing.

Key Responsibilities:

All Levels

  • Build and maintain reliable, maintainable test automation for web, mobile, and service-level products
  • Use agentic tools to turn requirements into test scenarios, generate automation, and diagnose failures, while owning the judgment on whether the evidence is trustworthy
  • Treat a generated test that passed once as a draft, not a test
  • Make test feedback actionable through execution speed, gating, failure classification, and flake discipline so developers can self-resolve failures
  • Trace failing tests across services using logs, traces, and deployment context to determine whether the root cause is product, automation, data, or environment
  • Use synthetic data and isolation patterns that keep PHI out of non-production while giving engineers deterministic test state
  • Perform deliberate exploratory testing alongside automation
  • Communicate residual risk clearly to Engineering and Product

Senior and Staff Levels

  • Own the team's quality strategy: define the verification strategy for a system based on risk, decide what evidence each layer needs, direct exploratory effort at unfamiliar failure modes, and state what is deliberately not tested and why
  • Build automation architecture the team can build on: design frameworks, fixtures, and shared patterns for reliable parallel execution, accounting for concurrency, asynchronous behavior, and eventual consistency
  • Own synthetic data and PHI guardrails: define the synthetic-data strategy, isolation patterns, and CI protections for non-production environments
  • Set testability and non-functional quality where risk warrants: define environment, observability, and data needs with Platform rather than building a parallel one, and set the depth of performance, resilience, accessibility, and security verification
  • Direct AI-first quality practice and keep judgment human: author agent conventions as versioned, reviewable artifacts and set boundaries for what agents may do without review

Staff Level

  • Raise the bar for testing automation across the engineering organization
  • Build a framework that helps other SDETs and software engineers automate testing more effectively
  • Lead the approach to testing AI-powered products

Education \& Qualifications:

SDET (Mid-Level)

  • Strong proficiency in a modern programming language and experience with test automation frameworks
  • Experience automating product testing across web, mobile, or API layers
  • Ability to trace a failing test using logs and deployment context and tell whether the root cause is product, automation, data, or environment
  • Already working AI-first, using agentic tools to generate and maintain automation while reviewing the output critically
  • Clear communication with Engineering and Product about quality risk

Senior SDET (5 to 8 years of experience, a guideline and not a hard gate)

  • Designed or evolved a quality system for a team, not just automation for features; able to translate product and architectural risk into a verification strategy and explain what was chosen not to be tested
  • Strong in a modern programming language with deep experience in test frameworks and shared automation architecture; able to reason about concurrency, asynchronous workflows, and failure propagation across services
  • Able to trace a failing test across services using logs, traces, and deployment context, and tell whether the root cause is product, automation, data, or environment
  • Owned synthetic-data strategy and deterministic isolation, including provisioning, reset, and non-production safeguards for sensitive data
  • Real depth in at least one non-functional area (performance, resilience, security, or accessibility) and knows when to bring in specialists
  • Communicates residual risk clearly to Engineering and Product, including when shipping with a known gap is the right call, without becoming the release bottleneck
  • Already works AI-first; has set conventions other engineers actually followed and can explain where the line is drawn on what an agent may change without human review

Staff SDET

  • All Senior SDET qualifications above, at a broader organizational scope
  • Experience building automation frameworks or shared testing platforms that other SDETs and engineers adopt
  • Experience raising the testing bar across multiple teams
  • Experience testing AI-powered products, or a demonstrated ability to define how to test them

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience with failure injection or recovery testing in production-like environments
  • Experience in healthcare, another regulated domain, or systems that handle sensitive customer data

Why Our Client:

  • Modernization effort with new customer-facing web and mobile experiences, a unified design system, and AI-powered capabilities
  • AI-first engineering culture where agentic development is standard practice
  • Quality treated as an engineering discipline, with SDETs owning strategy, automation, and signal quality
  • Close collaboration between Engineering, Product, and Design
  • Fully remote role
  • Established, stable organization investing in technology and innovation

Compensation, Benefits and Perks:

  • Base salary range: SDET (Mid-Level) $115,000 - $140,000
  • Base salary range: Senior SDET $135,000 - $165,000
  • Base salary range: Staff SDET $160,000 - $200,000
  • Actual compensation depends on experience, education, pay market/geography, and scheduled hours
  • Medical, dental, and vision benefits
  • 401(k) with match
  • Paid time off
  • Wellness program

Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis now and in the future. This position does not offer sponsorship.
